Youth members learn about disaster management

Hyogo ― Youth members of Jichiroren visited the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Memorial Museum in Kobe City and learned about disaster management on January 18 as the month marked the 30th anniversary of the earthquake.

The museum tells what happened to the city of Kobe and its residents 30 years ago, including video footage of the earthquake and panels showing the experiences of disaster victims. Young members learned about the reconstruction process, changes in the lives of those affected, how destructive natural disasters could be, and specific methods and ideas for disaster prevention and preparedness.

Carefully listening to a storyteller who had experienced the earthquake, they considered how to make use of the memories passed down by the disaster victims to secure residents’ lives and livelihoods in a future in which natural disasters could occur at any time.
